Inverell East Rotary Club held the Sapphire City River Run on Sunday 8th October 2017, and it proved to be a really successful event, probably one of the best since the Run’s inception. Approximately 250 participants met in reasonably good running conditions to test themselves over the 3 courses, from bubs in prams to seniors, with everyone having a great day!

The 9.2km race, the premium event of the day, was won by local Brendan Jones in an outstanding time of 32.13. He was tested all the way by past two time winner, Darryl Domer, who completed the course in a respectable 33.13, hot on Jones’s heels.
Lucy Kauter led the female runners home in 40.17, well in front of second placed Jodi Mayled who finished with the respectable time of 44.31.
The 4.6km event proved the most popular event of the day with 120 entrants facing the starters gun in a hotly contested race.
Matthew Campion of Glen Innes ran the distance in a blistering 14 minutes 59 seconds, winning with an 80 second margin over local Jamie Keilderling. First for the girls was Xanthe Cogan from Moree in 18 minutes 18 seconds in what was probably the run of the day for the young athlete.
Records were broken in all but the female 9.2km race where Kauter fell a mere 16 seconds short of the time set in 2011 by Lisa Frost.
Brendan Jones broke the record by 1 minute 13 seconds in the mens 9.2km, Matthew Campion took a minute 13 seconds off the previous best in the mens 4.6km and Xanthe Cogan took a massive 3 minutes of the girls 4.6km race.
Our younger athletes turned up in droves for the 2.5km dash, with some getting it done with a bit of push power from their mums and dads! Winners were awarded medals in Under 6’s to the Under 12’s with some great times being recorded.
Luke Martin and Olivia Partridge won the Under 6’s, Jack Partridge and Alice Trevithick were successful in the Under 8’s, Sam Custance was first overall and winner of the Under 10’s along with Zara Cogan, and Toby O’Neill and Matilda Oliver won the Under 12’s.
Such a successful day would not have been possible without the very generous sponsorship received from local businesses and the hard work of numerous volunteers and members of Inverell East Rotary. The organisers of the Sapphire City River Run are very thankful for the community’s support of this event and are already looking forward to the 2018 River Run!
