Sunday 9th October 2016
Article by Alistair Williams
Inverell East Rotary Club held the Sapphire City River Run on Sunday 9 October 2016, and it proved to be the most successful event since the Run’s inception. More than 320 participants met in absolutely ideal weather to test themselves over the 3 courses, from bubs in prams to seniors, with everyone having a great day!
The 9.2km race, the premium event of the day, was won by Deryl Domer, a previous winner of the event. He was tested all the way by the perennial Inverell athlete, Brett Newton. Deryl completed the course in a respectable 34 minutes 2 seconds after breaking away from Newton in the second half of the race.
Sarah Schiffmann, one of the youngest long distance entrants, blitzed the female field with the 15year old winning the female open division in 35minutes 34seconds with a margin of nearly 8 minutes over her nearest rival, Karla Bienke of Inverell.
