Honeywell Engineering report by Madison Carse & James Sullivan.

We’re excited to be here today to share our experience at the Engineers Australia Honeywell Summer School. Over the course of a week, we visited some of the most fascinating engineering sites, met industry professionals, and gained real insight into what an engineering career could look like.

One of the best parts of this experience was seeing just how broad and impactful engineering really is. We got to explore different industries, from defence and infrastructure to nuclear science and manufacturing.

We’ll take you through some of the places we visited, starting with Garden Island Military Base.

At Garden Island, we saw firsthand how engineering plays a crucial role in the defence sector. We toured naval ships, learned about the advanced technology used in their maintenance and operations, and saw how engineers keep these massive vessels running smoothly.

Next, we visited ANSTO, the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation.

This was one of the most fascinating stops on the trip. We saw how nuclear science is used in medicine, research, and industry. It was incredible to learn how engineers work with nuclear technology to develop life-saving medical treatments and scientific innovations.

We also visited BlueScope Steel, which gave us a completely different perspective on engineering.

Here, we got a close-up look at large-scale manufacturing. We saw how raw materials are processed into high-quality steel and how engineers ensure safety and efficiency in such a high-temperature, high-pressure environment. It was impressive to see engineering in action at such a massive scale.

Finally, we toured the M7-M12 motorway project, a major infrastructure development.

This visit showed us how civil and structural engineers plan and build large-scale transport projects. Seeing the construction process up close and learning about the challenges involved—like environmental impacts, materials, and traffic management—was insightful.

Overall, this program gave us a new appreciation for the variety of careers in engineering. It’s not just about working with numbers—it’s about solving real-world problems and making an impact on society.

If you’re thinking about applying, we’d recommend it. It’s a great way to see what engineering is all about, meet industry experts, and experience hands-on learning in a way that’s completely different from the classroom.
