Over 170 students from 7 schools participated in this year’s Science & Engineering Challenge Event. The Challenge, put together by the University of Newcastle each year, was held at the Inverell RSM Club. The schools that participated were Ashford Central, Inverell Public School. Macintyre High School, Inverell High School, Holy Trinity School, Glen Innes High School and Tenterfield High School.

The students had the opportunity to work in small groups at activities that set to challenge teamwork and cooperation in a STEM setting. Activities included bridge building, Eco habitat design, communications systems, wind turbine design, glider design, fish traps and workplace organization and electrical networking.

Over the past 20 years more than 2700 students have competed in this event locally. We hope that will go past 3000 next year. The event was sponsored by the University of Newcastle, the Australian Government, the Office of the Chief Scientist, Engineers Australia and our local group BOSS Engineering. Local MP Brendon Moylan joined the day to present the winning teams.

The winning team came from Glen Innes High School who have had a history of being successful at the event. They were closely followed by Holy Trinity School from Inverell and Macintyre High.   Tenterfield High designed the best Bridge and Glen Innes the best Eco habitat.

The event could not run without the support of the two local Rotary Clubs, Inverell Rotary and Inverell East Rotary. Their support is pivotal in the ongoing success of the event. Congratulations to the organizing team from Inverell for the success of the event.
