Mikeely Kent and Hannah Huyhn, our 2019/20 NYSF students, gave a good account of their recent experiences at our Rotary Dinner. Unfortunately, Hannah’s trip to Canberra for the session A activities was cut short by bushfires, air pollution and evacuation crises. In spite of these disruptions, Hannah established lasting friendships and career contacts. She recognized the incredible opportunities opened up by this Rotary Program and expressed her gratitude to our club for sponsoring and supporting her. She said that NYSF “opened her eyes to the amazing possibilities of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). She plans to pursue a career in Medical science.

Mikeely was able to complete the full 10-day Program at session B in Brisbane. She stayed at Emmanuel College (UQ) and took full advantage of all the activities offered. Her Interest Group (Medical Science) visited places such as the Evolution & Genetic Centre, the Institute of Molecular Bio Science the Genomics research Centre and the Queensland Academy of Sport. Hands-on experience in these places provide valuable insights for students like Mikeely who is also planning to pursue a career in Medical Science and Technology. She particularly enjoyed and appreciated her “Home Stay” with a Brisbane Rotary family and, like Hannah, expressed her gratitude to Inverell East Rotary for the wonderful NYSF opportunity.
